Hydraulic Solenoid Design Features

Posted by: Magnet-Schultz of America

Thu, Feb 23, 2017 @ 04:04 PM

In pt. 1 of our hydraulic solenoids post, we described how they differ from electromechanical solenoids and discussed some basic applications. We also had a follow-up blog post that described the two major functional categories of hydraulic solenoids, on/off and proportional. This post will expand on the different design and manufacturing features of tubes and coils depending on their intended purpose. Check our blog history for information on more technical subjects and feel free to make suggestions for future posts.

The latest entry in the Magnet-Schultz of America Solenoid 101 blog explains the basic types of hydraulic solenoid functionality. A more detailed analysis of these types of mechanisms has been previously published by MSA here. This recap will reduce the content to the simplest terms for a quick and clear understanding of the fundamental concepts. Check our blog history for information on more technical subjects and feel free to make suggestions for future posts.

Magnet-Schultz of America’s new Solenoid 101 series of blogs is designed to inform about the basic functions of solenoid products. We will start by tackling the fundamentals of solenoid terminology, function, and design. Future posts in the series will describe other MSA product categories and applications in a similar fashion, providing a quick and easy grasp of concepts. We will continue posting our more technical blogs, but want to make the full breadth of solenoid knowledge available to our visitors.

Developing a Preliminary Specification for Solenoids and Electromagnetic Devices

When System Design Engineers are tasked with incorporating an electromagnetic device (i.e. a solenoid, electromagnet, voice coil, etc.) into a new product, it would be useful if they could readily access design “guidelines” that would help them to identify, quantify and then communicate the performance characteristics needed to meet their system’s dimensional and performance requirements.

Great idea, but, where does one find this list of guidelines?

6 Basic Steps in Defining What Solenoid Best Suits Your Application

Posted by: Magnet-Schultz of America

Solenoids are used in a wide range of applications from locking doors to shifting the transmission on a motorcycle. Unfortunately there is no “one size fits all” approach to choosing a solenoid, or other eletro-magnetic product. However, there are several basic steps to follow when selecting the right solenoid for the application.

Some may consider a solenoid as just a linear actuator, but solenoids are capable of much more. They can push and pull, hold and block, rotate and vibrate. Within this range of capabilities, the first and most important question is, “how must the solenoid function in your application?”
